Fall is back on Koshlong Lake

After a hot and sunny summer, the colours and cooler weather of the Fall are a welcome change here at YMCA Wanakita.

It has been a busy fall, with back to back school groups on both our East and West camp sites.

It has also been an exciting time of transition, with the renovation of the Core well under way.  Thanks in part to a grant from the Trillium Foundation, our main kitchen is getting a complete overhaul.

While the Core is under construction, we have moved our meals to Fenton Hall, which has been a fun blast from the past.

Here are some pictures of the fall colours, and an idea of what it looks like to be eating in Fenton Hall again!
Fenton Hall set up for business!

The reds always come out at kayaking first.

Fun Fall WEP Fact

Here at YMCA Wanakita we love our WEP facts.  WEP stands for "Wilderness and Environmental Pursuits", which is our program area that focuses on understanding and living within our natural environment.

This fall many of our WEP inquiries have been focused on the fantastic fall colours.  This fall, the colours emerged earlier than usual and many believe are the most vibrant we've had in years.  It is likely that our abnormally dry summer contributed to this.  Take a look at this informative article for more information.

We are thankful to live in such a beautiful place, and hope that you have enjoyed the fall colours, no matter where you are!

Last week we had our first group of Winter 2013 at Wanakita: New Years Family Camp!

Our staff welcomed, played with, and rang in the new year with some amazing families. All day and night people could be seen skiing, snowshoeing, playing broomball and hockey, playing family games indoors and having a great time!

We had a Medieval Times theme dinner which was a blast! There were princes and princesses, and even dragons and duels! The themed meal of ribs and chicken was a big hit too.

We also celebrated New Years, Greenland Style (at 9:00 pm) with a fun games carnival and new years celebration! There was lots of silliness and dancing, and fun had by all!

Until next time, here's a photo of a Koshlong Lake sunrise this week!

We've been busy at Wanakita this winter with a mix of large and small groups of all ages!
The snow has been piling up and we've been having fun even in the chilly -30 degree weather last week!

Here are some of the things our staff and participants have been up to!

Lots of wind has been blowing the snow across the lake exposing the ice! Let's go skating!

A ski across the lake to the icefalls or Umbrella Island is always fun!

Broomball fun- slippery, hilarious, and great exercise!

Some squirrel tracks in the snow during a winter ecology hike!

A school group playing a big group game to keep warm!

A beautiful sunrise on the lake! And the -30 degree temperatures that we faced!

Some of our great instructors, always ready to show our participants a great time- teaching, playing & exploring!
